A fan of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt uses a recording of the game to create a custom exercise routine walking through the duchy of Toussaint.
As interconnected technology becomes more common, video game fans have found interesting ways of making their favorite titles more immersive and beneficial to play. Earlier this year, one player created a Grand Theft Auto 5 mod that connects to an exercise bike, and yesterday a Reddit user named pird_berson22 showed off a program they set up to connect their treadmill routine with the world of CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Using a recording of walking through Toussaint, from The Witcher 3‘s Blood and Wine DLC, pird_berson22 synced the region’s inclines with their Woodway 4front treadmill to create a hour-long workout. Adjusting the treadmill’s speed will change the speed of the camera moving through the scene, according to the player’s post on the r/witcher subreddit, and this same technology can work with GTA 5, Elder Scrolls Online, Skyrim, and Fallout 3.
In the comments, another Redditor named NightOwl9696 remarks on the possibility of using this kind of tech to actually move in the game, and pird_berson22 hopes this can be a reality someday through cheaper virtual reality tech and omnidirectional treadmills. Recently, Facebook unveiled a next-gen VR headset concept that looks like a pair of sunglasses, and as the technology continues to advance, there are more possibilities to utilize it for immersive experiences.
Of all the games to show off the potential of something like interconnected video game exercise, CD Projekt Red’s popular fantasy RPG The Witcher 3 makes a lot of sense. Though the game came out in 2015, it continues to be played thanks to how well the base content holds up and because of its huge community that changes the experience with mods that add Netflix character models into The Witcher 3, for example.
The Witcher Netflix series, starring Henry Cavill, has helped to elevate the property originating from a series of Polish novels to new heights, beyond what CD Projekt Red’s adaptations have achieved. A second season of the show is currently in development, and recently Netflix announced a Witcher prequel series set 1,200 years before Geralt of Rivia’s adventures.
There are merits to finding new ways of being engaged with one’s exercise routine, especially amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This use of The Witcher 3 by pird_berson22 certainly shows what kind of potential video games have when integrated with useful real-world technology.
