Irish U21s captain Jayson Molumby has been named on the Brighton bench ahead of their crucial game against Manchester City this afternoon.
The 19-year old is yet to make a Premier League appearance for the Seagulls but may get his chance today in a game that will have a huge bearing on where the title ends up.
Molumby had been tipped to break into the Brighton first team a couple of years ago but suffered a couple of nasty knee injuries which kept him out of action for a total of 15 months.
The Cappoquin native returned to fitness earlier this year, making the bench for Brighton’s FA Cup game against Derby County as well as captaining the Irish U21s to victory over Luxembourg in Stephen Kenny’s first game in charge.
Molumby spoke to Pundit Arena last month and outlined the setbacks that occurred on his long road to recovery.
“Yeah, there were a lot of bumps in the road to be fair.
“I was always aiming for different things. The Elite stage of the U19s European Qualifiers that was my aim to get back for that and it didn’t happen, then summer and pre-season, that didn’t happen.
“Every little goal I set myself or the physios set and wanted me to try and push towards kept backfiring really, it’s very disheartening.”
There’s no doubt that this represents a huge boost for the talented midfielder who will be hoping to kick on and finally break into the Brighton first team.
Should he make his Premier League debut and impress, he could be in line for a big season next year provided he stays fit in preseason.
Molumby is also expected to captain the Irish U21s during the upcoming Toulon Tournament which takes place in June.
