Clinton’s fitness court is first of its kind in Iowa | Local News

CLINTON — As part of an effort to make world-class fitness free and accessible in public spaces across the country, the city of Clinton has partnered with the National Fitness Campaign to bring a “Fitness Court” outdoor gym to Riverview Park.

The work-out area is located on Clinton’s riverfront, just north of the Candlelight Inn and near the Clinton Marina.

Invented by NFC, the Fitness Court is an outdoor bodyweight circuit training gym, featuring all-level workouts that can be completed in as little as seven minutes a day, according to an NFC press release. Clinton is one of only 100 cities and counties selected in 2018 to install this state-of-the-art facility, which was completed in May. The new Fitness Court is suitable for adults – recommended by NFC as those 14 years or older – of all fitness abilities and free to use.

By pairing the gym with its free mobile app, users can take classes, learn workout routines, and get fit, all outdoors in their own local park.

“Were excited to be the first in the State of Iowa to bring this trending fitness system to our community on our beautiful riverfront,” Clinton Parks and Recreation Director Josh Eggers said of the new facility, which will have its official grand opening Thursday.

The Clinton Fitness Court is part of a nationwide effort launched by the National Fitness Campaign to get people excited about health and wellness. One hundred select communities were invited to join the campaign in 2018, with Clinton being selected based on its “continued dedication to adding public resources for the betterment of its residents,” the press release states.

The system is now fully constructed, making Clinton the first and currently only city in the state of Iowa so far to offer the amenity.

“Bringing outdoor fitness equipment to Clinton was an important piece of the Department’s Parks Master Plan,” Eggers said of the project. “When we first saw the Fitness Campaign videos, we were impressed by how unique the system looked compared to other traditional outdoor fitness systems. We were equally impressed by how user friendly the system is with the downloadable app.”

From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, all residents and local businesses in the region are invited to test out the new facility and its matching mobile app during a free-to-attend launch party event at 511 Riverview Drive. Attendees will learn how to effectively use the Fitness Court through a series of demonstrations, according to the press release.
